I'm so sorry about Proposition 8. That must be so deeply frustrating and disappointing, and it's terribly unfair to give the right and then take it away so quickly. (I hope this doesn't mean that marriages made while they were legal are invalidated.)
Here in NZ we have Civil Unions, which are not identical to a civil marriage but are available to any pair of adults regardless of gender. I think they're a step in the right direction. I hope that one day civil marriage will be available in that way - any couple should be able to have a registry-office/city hall type marriage, and be able to call it marriage, and have the same marital rights under law. I'm happy to leave it up to churches to decide whether to offer religious marriage to same-sex couples, but they need to recognise that people who DON'T follow their religion should not be barred by law from doing objectively harmless things forbidden by it.
