I think your mother's informant is a) tragically misinformed, b) winding your mother up, c) sort of a crap lesbian, or d) all of the above. It reminds me of the guy on my teacher training course who, seeing some Sailor Moon accessory I had on my bag, told me very seriously and in an 'I hate to burst your bubble, but I feel I owe it to you' tone, that in the original Japanese version Sailor Moon was 'basically a porn.' And when I told him that no, it wasn't, it was always a series aimed at little girls, and explained how people got that impression because of different Japanese cultural values about nudity, and that the series proper shouldn't be confused with pornographic fan-works, and that I KNEW because I had SEEN nearly all of the original material, HE STILL DIDN'T QUITE BELIEVE ME. You know what I think it is? People would *rather* believe that there is some secret bad/sexual meaning behind something innocent, like that craze for multi-coloured rubber bracelets, than accept that there isn't and there was nothing to worry about. People can be so strange.
