Forgive me if this seems really silly, but didn't Crow email-spam the university to say that there is a standing policy of not giving honorary degrees to politically affiliated politicians (redundancy is for added safety).

It seems like a wise thing to do, otherwise they would have to do some awkward balancing act between the two major parties, and/or take flak for being politically biased.
