trenchkamen: (Despair and failure)

Awesome

I have a bad cough, a high fever, congestion that you wouldn't believe, and I've been vomiting up all the mucous that is draining into my stomach from my sinuses. If I try to sleep sitting up, I get horribly nauseated from all the mucous in my stomach. If I sleep lying down, I can't breathe. So I can't sleep. My parents went ahead and gave me a Z-pack because there is an at least 110% chance I'll get a secondary bacterial infection anyway. Pseudoephedrine keeps me awake, NyQuil makes me sleepy, so I'm somewhere in-between.

Didn't go to school/lab today. Probably won't tomorrow unless I make a most dramatic turn-around. AND the lab went out to lunch for a birthday today, so of course today is one of the days I'm home sick. FML.

Remember Cougar Con? Remember that secret Cougar Message Board that was theorized? I think [livejournal.com profile] omegadonut found it. For the sake of context, Smogon is a message board for competitive Pokemon players. I think that's all that need be said.

I should lie down before I pass out.

It's hard to reconcile my desire to relax on sick days with my feeling of guilt over not working. I'm not going in today, even though I'm turning around; I still feel as though I may be contagious. Damn I am hungry though. The past 48 hours I've had two packs of ramen, a handful of pretzels, and a Jell-o cup. Pseudoephedrine is an appetite suppressant.

It's only going to get worse as you go to graduate school, but dude...your labmates present and future will thank you for quarantining yourself when you're sick. You have no idea how many colds and coughs I've gotten from sick labmates, and I'm always annoyed when they insist on working, and getting everybody else sick too.

Working hard while you're sick will only make the recovery process take longer. Relax, sleep, eat, fluids, all that.

Hey, have you decided where you're going to grad school yet?

I've been wait-listed at UCLA. They've had something like an eight-week backlog in going through our applications. I don't know what happened. My interviewers all told me they would highly recommend me, and we were told 110/140 of those interviewed were in. Maybe the funding situation changed. I'm quite confused and nervous, because if I don't get in at UCLA, I didn't get in anywhere this year.

And I didn't wear vampire fangs to my interviews. I was dressed nicely, polite, didn't say "That's what she said" once, didn't do anything blatantly stupid. As far as I remember. I was on my toes.

Hrm, could be funding situation? I'm not in ACCESS, so I don't really know. Whatever the reason, now is not the time to be thinking about what you possibly did wrong or maybe how you've fallen short. Now is the time to ensure that you GET IN.

Okay, here's what you do when you're waitlisted:

Contact the people in charge of admissions. Let them know that you're still really interested in UCLA, and tell them they should contact you if a slot opens up. Make sure they know who you are, how interested you are, and that you're at the forefront of their minds if something opens up. Don't just sit there and wait for them to contact you, you have to go to them and let them know that you are still really interested. :/

That's how you get in from waitlists.

GO.
GO NOW.

I have done that. Twice. I've let them know in no uncertain terms UCLA is my first choice, and I love the program, and they just need to say they word and I'm there.

Oh, okay. Excellent, good!

In that case...good luck. :3
