I read the entire Twilight bullshit fest over Christmas break, since my sister had them. She also collects the very same type of book that you mentioned--the dark covers with the singular thing or person that stands out from the "teen paranormal romance" (wtf) section. I wonder if she has this one. It wouldn't surprise me.
Usually when I read about the success about these sorts of things, my writer half gets exceedingly depressed for the future of whatever I write. But I know it's better than this, so I write it anyway. I think Neil Gaiman wrote about that feeling not long ago on his blog.
I also think good characters subconsciously effect the author. That cliche about the characters controlling the story, and the author merely being a scribe, is an apt observation.
