There's a keyboard layout called "US International" or something like that, where certain punctuation keys turn into "dead keys" that apply accents to the following character.
On the Mac, it's a lot easier, because you can use the Option key in the same way by default. option-n will add a tilde to the next letter you type.
You want a typing nightmare? Esperanto. They add accents to letters that don't have them in any other language, and neither Windows nor MacOS ship with keyboard mappings for it. Most people don't bother and just add the letter X instead. Cxu vi komprenas?
