Yaoi-con 2008 Con Report

Yeah, finally.

If you recall that wig I said was due to arrive that day, it DID, but it was... blonde. Like, peroxide blonde in artificial light. Silver my arse. Not only was Edgeworth's suit some hideous shade of pink, he was a Scottsdale mom.

My flight was delayed out of Sky Harbor, so I wound up looking over my biochem notes while at the gate. Sarah Palin came on the news, said something stupid (yeah, I know; be more specific), and the woman sitting next to me and the man sitting behind me all snorted at about the same time. This is how a conversation started. The woman is a fresh-from-India consultant from a Chicago firm who has apparently never met a real, live Republican (LOL), and the young man is my age and already running for state senate in Nevada. The hour flew by quickly. The young man discussed politics from his viewpoint, and the young woman asked us questions about the play of demographics in American politics. I also explained to her what exactly a smallpox vaccine was, given that her sister had the injection decades ago and she thought she was immune for life (LOL no).

Hillel picked me up at LAX, and we drove to his and Vicky's ([livejournal.com profile] fabula_umbrae's) apartment for sexytimes that included Mershika (spelling?!) and cleaning out the car for the drive up to San Francisco.

I so called WEEKS ago that when Vicky said we were leaving directly after her class ended at 11:00 AM, that actually meant we would be lucky to be out of LA proper by 5 PM. Well, we actually left at 3:30PM, so we ended up arriving in San Francisco at almost 1 AM. Ergo, if you were wondering why I wasn't at the con at all on Friday, this would be why. The drive up was nice. Hillel and I took turns driving. I've never driven that part of California (Interstate 5), and a drive goes by so much more quickly with other people in the car with you. We listened to the Obama/McCain debate on the radio, along with a hell of a lot of musicals. Vicky double-handed her DS and mine, both with The World Ends With You, to evolve pins with mingle points as I would make myself hideously carsick if I tried to play myself. I had already double-dosed myself with Bonine, which is probably the only reason I did not get sick while I was a passenger.

Our hotel room was AWESOME.

We woke up shockingly early (for us) and made our way to the SFO Marriott. Upon walking in we realized that there was a stunning lack of GAY in the hotel: no costumes, no fan-cars, just a bunch of bemused weekenders in polo shirts staring at my garish-as-hell suit. Turns out that was the wrong hotel, and the con hotel was actually twenty minutes in the opposite direction. We knew we had finally reached the right hotel when we saw a girl in a goth-loli dress with neko-mimi.

The Gyakuten Saiban panel was at noon. Now, usually I cosplay Lawyer!Phoenix, and given that at every single other con I have been to the Lawyer!Phoenixes outnumber the Edgeworths 10 to 1, I thought cosplaying Edgeworth would even up the score a little bit. I was assulted by a sea of pink as soon as I walked in. And no blue.

There was not a single Lawyer!Phoenix at the entire convention. What the fuck.

Perfect timing for me to switch costumes. I would have had a monopoly on the pimpage.

Anyway, I found quite a few people at the panel--[livejournal.com profile] shahni, [livejournal.com profile] darkened_wings, [livejournal.com profile] impure_impulse, [livejournal.com profile] teagueful, [livejournal.com profile] skuldchan, [livejournal.com profile] ryshili, Crouton, and [livejournal.com profile] phisinfinity were all there. I admittedly didn't listen very carefully to the proceedings, spent most of the time making comments to Skuld and Vicky.

And then, there was much sexy tomfoolery.

[livejournal.com profile] shahni and I get up close and personal.

Meanwhile, Kristoph gets in with the interns. Von Karma looks very surprised.

OTP forever. Cool Hobo!Phoenix ([livejournal.com profile] skuldchan and Edgeworth (me) moments from doing something naughty. We're such badasses.

And then, [livejournal.com profile] zorotheram showed up in her EPIC Gant costume, and there was much raping all around. And sex.

See, even Von Karma got it.

And then they made up, because they're BFFs like that.

New OTP.

Hillel was accosted by [livejournal.com profile] skuldchan) and [livejournal.com profile] akiko to take couples pictures, all of which were adorable. I followed them out there and saw a Seishirou cosplayer with the contact and everything (!!!!!), so I gave her a huge hug because nobody cosplays non-Tsubasa X anymore, and damn if I'm not a huge X/Tokyo Babylon fangirl still. I need to clean my Dead!Seishirou costume, because it's such a blast to wear. But I digress. From that photoshoot, which I slid into at the last minute, this resulted.

You know it to be true. We both have the conception that Hobo!Phoenix and Edgeworth never separated from each other.

Sometime after that, Kyle (as an awesome Patrick Bateman) drove us over to Trader Joe's, and I got some amazing sparkling cranberry juice (like 'grape juice', amirite?).

When I was visiting [livejournal.com profile] toggy, [livejournal.com profile] xel_ko, and [livejournal.com profile] astrokittie, this happened.

Yes, that is one Dr. Gregory House, M.D. This is my new OTP 4eva.

The cane even has the flame decals. Pimp.

Masquerade kind of sucked balls except for the Gyakuten Saiban group (I heart you guys), where [livejournal.com profile] impure_impulse did impure things with her Daryan hair and it made us all hot and bothered. The majority of the rest of the skits were, eh. Yeah. KARAOKE CONTEST IS THAT WAY CLOSED DUE TO AIDS, LOL. (Why wasn't there karaoke, anyway?)

Vicky, Hillel, and I wound up in Skuld's room for much boozing and chattering, and there were great sexy times had all around. This is where I formally met [livejournal.com profile] akiko and [livejournal.com profile] hildico. Whatever that raspberry alcohol you had was, I WANT MORE OF IT. I also had some strawberry daiquiri, because Edgeworth is a flaming fag like that. And because Lauren can't stand the taste of hard alcohol.

The dance was interesting. It wasn't nearly as hot and disgusting as a lot of con dances, but the Gyakuten Saiban people ended up in a huge knot raving. It was fun. [livejournal.com profile] teagueful and I wound up staying later than the rest of the group, because we're just cool like that.

Sometime around 3 AM I found Hillel completely trashed in Cosplay Hell's room (he thought he wasn't that drunk, but he was), so I drove him and Vicky back to our hotel. We crashed pretty much immediately, though I had to take a shower as that wig had been pinned on my head for 18+ hours, and I felt disgusting. But damn, it was so worth it.

This was the day of the 'official' Gyakuten Saiban gathering by the pool, but we didn't make it to the con center in time. My heart broke. By the time I got there I had an hour before I had to leave for the airport, so we got In-n-Out and made a last run by the dealer's room where I found this awesome "no Nazis" armband I HAD to wear to the airport, and Lolita Kisama (always one of my favorite booths) played that goddamn "Jump On It" song over and over again, so I had it stuck in my head. I thankfully got to run into everybody and say a last goodbye (I miss you guys already), and [livejournal.com profile] zorotheram, in a moment of sheer awesomeness, gave me her Phoenix pin. I love it so much. Then, Hillel and Vicky dropped me off at the airport half an hour before my flight was going to take off, and I slid into the boarding line RIGHT as it started to move. EPIC TIMING.

I'm sorry I wasn't around more than I was. I am glad I got to see all of you guys, though. If any of you are coming to ALA, that's during my winter break, so I'm planning on driving out to LA for that.

----------------------

I am so glad my tri-term (not really mid-term) tests are over. I think I mopped the floor with my biochem and physical chemistry tests, and leading the class discussion in genethics went about as well as can be expected when the class just stares blankly at you whenever you pose a difficult philosophical question. Maybe I'm an elitist bitch, but sometimes I just want to smack most of the people in that class and just tell them to shut their mouths before they say something else inane.

Since the sun's been down for a while, I think I'll walk to GameCrazy and see if they have a copy of Disgaea DS in stock. Or, if I want to not be lazy I'll drive to Target, as I need to get groceries anyway. I'm also sorely tempted to get Persona 3 FES. I've been meaning to play the MegaTen games for years.

OMG House MD Cosplay FTW!!!! Sooooooooooo Jealous. I would've taken SO many pics, especially if he had a Wilson with him.

Also, Persona 3 FES is AMAZING. It's one of my best friends' favorite game...and trust me when I say that means a lot.

Glad you had such awesome times. You SO have to visit Orlando. Like, soon. ^_^

[identity profile] trenchkamen.livejournal.com 2008-10-03 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
He had no Wilson, sadly.

I haven't been to Disney World in a long time. I remember liking the Bill Nye/Ellen ride.

[identity profile] darkenedwings.livejournal.com 2008-10-02 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
WTF @ my SUPER MATRIX DODGE in that picture up there, hahaha what am I doing

WE NEEDED TO HANG OUT MORE. COME BACK. T_T

[identity profile] trenchkamen.livejournal.com 2008-10-03 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I know. I want to...

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2008-10-02 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
I would ttly cosplay Subaru and Sei with you.

Expect I'm not wearing a black turtle neck and trench coat in the southwest.

[identity profile] trenchkamen.livejournal.com 2008-10-03 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
We're back down to double-digits now, at least?

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2008-10-03 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
99 as oppose to 115? XD

The only on that'd work would be phoenix comic con, AX would be death.

[identity profile] shahni.livejournal.com 2008-10-02 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
Oh baby, Klavier wants to hump your Edgey hard~ gotta learn from the adults, ja? ;D

lskdhlsdhkg seriously it was so wonderful seeing you, and I'm so sorry you had to catch me in the grumpiest mood EVER. I really wish I could have spent more time with you. ;_; But I'm also glad I got to see you before you left and give you hugs :3

[identity profile] trenchkamen.livejournal.com 2008-10-03 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, there's no need to apologize. Stuff happens at con. I've been there. And I'm glad I got to at least say good bye before I had to run like hell to the airport.

[identity profile] white-manjushri.livejournal.com 2008-10-02 07:08 am (UTC)(link)
This entry makes me want to go to a con. I miss that gayness. I miss it so...

[identity profile] trenchkamen.livejournal.com 2008-10-03 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
There's just no gay like con gay.

[identity profile] phisinfinity.livejournal.com 2008-10-02 07:44 am (UTC)(link)

I took a bioethics class as an elective in pharmacy school. For a school that's reputed to be full of damn pinkos and baby-killing commies,* there were a lot of people expressing right-wing views. I rolled my eyes a lot. (Got an A, though. I'm good at BSing stuff.)

There was a guy in my p-chem class who got like 95s on all the tests. He was taking the class as an ELECTIVE in his physics/pre-engineering major. We were all like O_o. But he helped us with our homework, because he understood that shit.

*Some people of Jesse Helms' cadre said that UNC stood for the University of N---ers and Communists. The Old South sucked. Hard.

[identity profile] trenchkamen.livejournal.com 2008-10-03 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Fuck the old south. And it's all relative. In Amarillo it was a fairly radical view not to want to criminalize homosexuality.

[identity profile] skuldchan.livejournal.com 2008-10-02 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
It's sad that I live here and probably won't be able to make it to ALA because I will be back home with my parents then. :( *sad*

And the raspberry beer is Lindeman's Raspberry Lambic. :D I'm not sure how purchasing alcohol in AZ works, but I'm pretty sure you'll be able to find it in liquor stores once you turn 21. :D

[identity profile] miwasatoshi.livejournal.com 2008-10-03 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I've had that before at Papago Brewery. That's great stuff.

*steals Lauren away to Papago Brewery for her power hour*

[identity profile] trenchkamen.livejournal.com 2008-10-03 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't get drunk; I have to drive.

[identity profile] trenchkamen.livejournal.com 2008-10-03 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, same rules, I think.

And you have to go back to Utah?

[identity profile] skuldchan.livejournal.com 2008-10-03 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's Christmas/New Year holidays around then so I have to be back home. I will probably not have come back by the time ALA rolls around. :/

[identity profile] hildico.livejournal.com 2008-10-02 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
XD House/Edgeworth is new crossfandom OTP~!

[identity profile] trenchkamen.livejournal.com 2008-10-03 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
It works on so many levels.
