The above statement is 100% accurate.

And why was Ziggy Stardust so firmly entrenched in the closet? He met a woman. A woman forced him in there.

Heidi is a thirteen-month old Welsh Corgi/something mix (we think Jack Russell Terrier, God help us) Dad found wandering around our backyard on Friday. We found her masters, but the woman who came to collect her revealed that her husband did not want the dog, so she had been left staked outside for months. Not only is that cruel; in my neighborhood, that is coyote bait. Prior to that, her family had abandoned her when they moved away, so she roamed her neighborhood for months before the pound finally picked her up. She was put on death row for nipping at another dog (note: this is how Corgis herd livestock), and rescued at the last minute by the sister of the woman who came to pick her up. For reasons that are unclear, Heidi wound up living with the neighbor, who is too sick to keep up with her, and whose husband would just as well see her dead. So, Dad offered to take her in. The woman said she'd think about it, and dragged her home.

The next day, I woke up to Dad calling around the house after he returned from somewhere. He had Heidi with him. Her owners had surrendered her.

And, yes, Dad vetoed me naming her Ein, and not because he realized how disgustingly weeaboo that would be. Heidi was the name she came with, and he likes it.

So, we have a dog. And the cats are not amused. She keeps trying to play with them, but they're not having any of it. Whitey and Bassy hiss and swat at her. Ziggy, who has never been around a dog before, remains petrified under my mother's bed until Heidi goes to her den in the garage. I feel so bad for him.

Heidi is a total sweetheart, but is in dire need of some training. I took her to the dog park yesterday, and she did wonderfully with the other dogs, but she does not listen to a damn word I said. We're working on getting her to walk on a lead without pulling and not to jump on furniture. One small thing at a time. Dad signed up for obedience training at PetSmart (where we ran into [livejournal.com profile] keichisfuuma's sister, who has grown up; I remember her being in junior high). Mom is only allowing her to stay on the conditions that she minds, and that she does not harass the cats, which I think is fair. Dad is really jumping gung-ho into this. He's already fallen in love with her. And I think [livejournal.com profile] omegadonut has too. He just lost his own dog, so it's understandable he'd be so enamored with her. He's been absolutely awesome with her. She already loves him and listens to him.

I am leaving for Anime LA on Wednesday; who else is going? I am on staff, last I checked guest registration, so I may be in a back room quite a bit, but you can ask for me.

I will definitely bring the Naoto costume; I still need to dye my hair and finish my hat band. I dyed the shoes today. A full pot of dye later they look not brown, not blue, but indigo. I guess it's something. In some of the shots her shoes look kind of indigo, or maybe that's wishful thinking. Edgeworth I don't have the wig for right now; I just remembered [livejournal.com profile] xel_ko has it from Fanime. Hobo!Phoenix I need to get a sweater for if I'm going to do that. I know; I fail the hell out of cosplay right now.

Also, after inhaling dye fumes for too long and a bottle of Smirnoff Raspberry Twist (which is pussy as hell but fuck you it tastes good), I'm feeling a little loose.

If you want a Hobo!Phoenix hoodie, you'll have to come to my place. :p I will likely be busy this weekend and unable to hang out at Anime LA, but we'll see?

Also, I think the best way to introduce cats to a new member of the household is to confine them to a room for a while. Let the cats get used to the smell, let them interact for a few minutes each day. Introduce them slowly, or some of your cats are going to live in fear for the rest of their lives, and that's not nice to the kitties either.

That is true.

First day I brought in the second cat, he was deathly terrified of my first one. It takes a lot of biting and chasing and hissing for them to finally get used to each other and even LIKING each other!

Also, you should dress like Naoto, but with your hair dyed grey.
Why? You know why. -_-

Sometimes cats who get introduced abruptly never get used to each other, and that always makes me sorry for the pets. Pets should always be gradually introduced, anything else is a sudden invasion of a stranger on their territory.

The Humane Society has a few guidelines to keep in mind when introducing new pets to already existing ones in the household.

I've tried, multiple times, to convince Dad that a slow introduction would be best, but when I get home from the lab he has them all out together in one room. Fucking awesome. I feel so awful for my poor cats.

No one ever wants to do their bloody homework/research with a pet. They figure the pet belongs to them, and therefore exists at the owner's convenience.

Looking forward to seeing you at ALA, kiddo! :D

And hopefully your cats stop being terrified of Heidi after they figure out that she isn't actively trying to eat them. I'll be amused if she does try to literally start herding cats, though...

We'll see. It's hard for them not to be scared when she's pawing at them.

Doggie doggie doggie. I want a doggie that looks exactly like that.

If I could afford the $300 deposit on pets, I would take the neighbor's dog, which is a Jack Russel Terrier. *murrrr*

And I would name it Ein. Erin, being on letter off, would probably be ALL for it. *sadness* HAVE FUN AT THAT CONVENTION I KEEP MISSING!
