I know this is old news (and old story is older than me), but this story never fails to amuse me. And by amuse me I really mean half-amuse me, half-piss me the fuck off and make me want to blow up the planet.

I do think it's well worth re-visiting. At least once a generation.

All this reinforces my smugness about never having particularly liked diamonds.

I think they're overrated for everything but industrial applications.

They have a high refraction index, which makes them sparkle prettily. Isn't that all that jewels are really supposed to do?
But I agree that they really have much more useful applications. In science and medicine as well as industry. Not that we need the natural stones for that.
