I'm about the same as you when it comes to public transit. I only voluntarily sit next to another person if there's no isolated seat available and the ride is long. I've noticed a lot of Berkeley kids who are the same way, too, and very few who aren't. Maybe it's all the students who aren't used to public transit or big cities.
