Hey friends' list:

My roomate's mommy sent me candy. i've never even met her mom. It was really nice. I feel bad now because I didn't get anybody anything, other than the ghey-ass Spongebob valentines for the Cancer Vac group.

Those festivities aside, such as they are...

Fuck NMR/IR interpretations.

Fuck NMR/IR interpretations.

Fuck NMR/IR interpretations.

I'm about this close to kicking my computer screen in, and the organic chem test is tomorrow morning. At least the rest of the material is easy.

I almost RickRolled an entire bar at karaoke, but the lady running the thing couldn't find the CD with Astley on it. Emo tear. A chick kept hitting on me, though, so I guess that's something.

It is amazing how much easier it is to type in Japanese now that one of the grad students in the lab showed me how to have Windows interpret your phonetic input. I used to copy-paste from kana tables. Yeah, I know. Exactly as slow as it sounds. お母さんのように易いだよ。

Oh, yeah, check out who's quoted (incorrectly) at the end of the article.

I haven't worked much with IR spectra, but what I have done has been frustrating to say the least.
I spent yesterday with XPS though and I'm amazed how well that works (for relevant samples at least).

This isn't for lab, it's for class. If it were for lab, I would get to run the printouts against a database.

Just what do they expect you to do without a database? Are you supposed to try to reason out peak positions from first principles?

Most likely she was given spectra and asked to deduce a structure.

Peak positions? Do you mean chemical shift or splitting?

Does your sudden learning of how to type Japanese, have anything to do with how 4chan started raiding 2chan two days ago?

Another cheap karaoke trick, pioneered by a friend of mine, is to pull up Free Bird and sing War Pigs to it. It scans the same, but the verse structure is different.

Whut raid.

"Free Bird" is kind of an assholish song, if you listen to the lyrics.

"Free Bird" is kind of an assholish song if you don't even listen to the song. All you have to do is yell it out during any performance where people are on stage.

"War Pigs" is also assholish in ways that are most likely to be annoying to Skynyrd fans. Not only is it a war protest song, but also the last line is "Satan, laughing, spreads his wings." Rednecks hate dangling participles.

I want to start up a mashup band called Black Skynyrd.

Typing in Japanese is EVIL. But it's really easy to set up your computer so that you can change the input language to Japanese. Of course, I had to have my friend do it for me, but still. I have since been able to teach others how to do it.

Luckily, my school laptop comes with 5 different language input systems already set up. So if I knew how to type in Chinese (Simplified or Traditional) or Spanish, I could do those, too, plus the English and Japanese. *loves her school*

It's typing in Spanish that I have to figure out how to do... Stupid accents and tildes!

I've been done with formal Spanish training since high school. Bueno.

There's a keyboard layout called "US International" or something like that, where certain punctuation keys turn into "dead keys" that apply accents to the following character.

On the Mac, it's a lot easier, because you can use the Option key in the same way by default. option-n will add a tilde to the next letter you type.

You want a typing nightmare? Esperanto. They add accents to letters that don't have them in any other language, and neither Windows nor MacOS ship with keyboard mappings for it. Most people don't bother and just add the letter X instead. Cxu vi komprenas?

Hey, you're famous! It might not be right, but I guess that's better than most. XD What did you actually say?

Ahh, my organic test is next Thursday. I feel odd for liking NMR/IR interpretations. Then again, my professor is sort of obsessed with them it seems, and spent a lot of extra time explaining/delving into them.

More or less what she said, but taken out of context it doesn't have the implications I intended. It could have been much worse.

You ARE odd.

Why you be hating on the NMR? The IR did nothing to you.

:P

It did everything to me.

In the bad place.

I hated those. And mass specs (with complicated compounds especially). And in the real world you don't have to analyze them like that. grr. I heard that we get to revisit those in biophysical chem. can't wait.
