trenchkamen: (Hojo science and progress)
[personal profile] trenchkamen
As brought to my attention by [livejournal.com profile] joeshadows.

Fuck yeah, science.

Also, though I cannot really speak in detail about it here, I may be on to something big.

I need to get to bed; I have to be up at ass o'clock to go on a "field trip" to the Salt River. Yes, it is also for science, but not my science--observing someone else's science for my undergraduate research program. I know the heat is going to make me grateful that I'm a lab rat and not a field rat.

YEAH SCIENCE! I'm still trying to figure out why food dye would reduce spinal inflammation here. And the fact that it's blue is actually sort of cute, though I don't know about seeing blue humans on the street.

Hell, who knows.

The blue apparently wears off after a week or so.

Brilliant Blue G? I think... I think I might have fed large amounts of that to my fruit flies as an undergraduate; it was the dye we used to label their food because it was visible through the intact abdomen, and didn't seem to significantly affect their preferences in the dark.

Well, so much for the hope that it's probably pharmacologically inactive.

I saw that research article last night...

I'm kinda skeptical about it... Because if that thing works... what the hell have my lab been doing!? (Well, not "my" lab)

Yeah, I've been working in a lab that's studying a therapeutic mean to treat transverse myelitis. LOL, maybe I should try this on mice, too.

Aaaaand, it seems that we do have the mice to test this on. We have "some" number of inflammatory models. Just dunno how much.

It'd be a challenge to find a way to quantitatively make a comparison between control and BBG mice, though. Maybe MRI to look at their axons.

So you're skeptical because it would undercut your investment?

No, not really, I'm actually skeptical because I've had my doubts toward science things published by non-Pubmed material. (I've seen what they wrote about mammalian evolution on monkeys. Both my prof and I agreed that it was blown out of proportion)
Rather than seeing ppl saying, "Ooh, we have miracle cure!" I wanna see it right down to the materials, procedures, and references.

And... I'll admit, I was feeling intimidated when I realized that there's a possibility that my project could very well be an effort for naught when the answer might actually indeed lies in the BBG. There're other projects going on in the lab, so investment is not an issue. LOL, except for the past 3 months of near-overnight stay in the lab on my part. But, the ppl @ Rochester probably killed themselves over this, too. I forgot that possibility.

Ah well, science shouldn't be a competition. I'm still waiting for Rochester to publish their papers, though. And then... I still can't give 100% unless it's been reconfirmed by further experiments.

I'm sorry, I get cynical like that. *headdesks*

The blue color makes them look really cold, but also adorable. I'm terribly curious about how that would work.

Love the science but mostly, I'm going: omgthosemicearesocute.

...and this is why I cannot go into animal-based research. ;-;

Neither can I. I get far too attached to animals.

Aww, Blue mice.
Well Lauren when you break life's code and find the meaning of life I expect a phone call. Then we can go get drinks.
It's awesome to hear you are making progress. Continue venturing where no... Uh.. Lauren has gone before.
